In a week that began with riots in Northern Ireland that threaten the integrity of the country I call home and has ended with a primary school shooting in America where 18 children who should be looking forward to Santa's visit are now dead, there is one Christmas carol with lyrics that come to mind.
I went carolling for the first time this year and, apart from feeling super festive afterwards, I thought it was so lovely seeing people smile as they walked into the shopping centre foyer. Practically everybody reached into their pockets to give a little of what they had, not because we sang so beautifully but because it was traditional and in keeping with the sentiment of the season. Or at least I think that was the reason! So I want to leave you with the poignant lyrics from one of the carols we sang and wish you a happy and peaceful run up to Christmas.
"God rest ye merry, gentlemen
Let nothing you dismay
Remember, Christ, our Saviour
Was born on Christmas day
To save us all from Satan's power
When we were gone astray
O tidings of comfort and joy,
Comfort and joy
O tidings of comfort and joy"
